Intro
Manaus, the capital of the Brazilian state of Amazonas (Amazonia). Manaus boasts
a sizeable population of 1.5 million people and is a fairly bustling city in the
midst of the jungle. There are wonderful restaurants, nice hotels, unique
shopping and authentic Indian crafts.
History
From 1890 to 1920 the rubber boom brought prosperity to the city, actually to a
few rubber barons who brutally used Indians to collect the latex from the rubber
trees. In the late 1970s the Brazilian government and private companies began
extensive development the mineral and agricultural wealth of the surrounding
rain-forested region. To encourage even further commercial and tourist
development Manaus has also been declared a "Zona-Franca" (duty free zone).
The People
The women here are mostly Indigenous Indian and a slight bit of Portuguese. They are
gorgeous, friendly and love to party so you will find your share of good times
in this Amazonian city.
Exotic Nightlife
Now Manaus is not the place to go if you are only looking for erotic adventures. But if you are here to take one of the many tours of the world’s largest rainforest, and want to have a little fun on the side, then you will not be disappointed. If you know where to go, you can definitely find quite alot of action, mostly non-pro. Some of the clubs seem to have a "motel" very close by if you are so inclined and get lucky. On an average night out in one of these clubs, the chances of "getting lucky" are good. The festive atmosphere and spirit of the region, accompanied by some
good “forro” music and dancing, exotic amazon beauties, and friendly people makes it certain the Manaus nightlife will be well worth the trip.
Tropical Hotel
A popular place to visit and to definitely score, Tropical Hotel is a disco, not a boite
but is just a great place to start your night and possibly meet up
with a few of the beautiful amazon women who inhabit this town. As a tourist, you will certainly attract attention, and the women are not shy about flirting with you and letting you know they are interested. Like most cities in Brazil, the women outnumber the men, so the competition for you can be fierce.
Ponta Negro
This is the strip where most of Manaus’ strip clubs and massage parlors can be
found. Here you can meet sexy young girls who want to make your visit in the
Amazon as exciting as possible. There is even a drive thru club. A place where
you drive through and there are twenty odd girls lined up. You pick the girl you
want and take her right there in your car, its that simple and yes that
convenient.
Night life
There is also a relatively active nightlife in Manaus apart from the organized
festivals. Local bars and nightclubs often have major Brazilian stars as
headliners, as well as Manaus being the home of the group Carrapicho, the group
who recorded the international hit Tic Tic Tac (or to hear it "tchiki tchiki
tchac").
A more relaxed, but equally enjoyable, festa is spending a Sunday afternoon at
Ponta Negra. I regularly go to the barracas (small stalls) at Ponta Negra along
the beach (during dry season, during rainy season the beach disappears under
water) on a Sunday afternoon for some regional food and a few cold beers with
friends. It is an excellent spot for meeting people, or just people watching. I
regularly make new "friends" there.
Weather
The Amazon is a very tropical environment in that the weather is hot, humid and
wet. It would be best to bring jeans, tennis shoes, sandals and t-shirts. You
should also pack sunscreen and possibly an umbrella just in case of a little
tropical downpour.
Outdoor Opportunties
Manaus serves as a key destination for Amazon tourism. Everywhere you go, you
are assailed by the options: nature camps, river rides, boat trips, trekking
excursions, piranha watching - there are choices galore. The adventurous tourist
will not be disappointed, and neither will the day-tripper.
Eateries
Food is equally good and cheap: you can get by with eating on the streets for as
little as, and a little more if you prefer restaurants where you can sit down at
tables. In that sense, it is probably just about as cheap (or expensive,
depending on which way you look at it) as Georgetown. Yet, the range and quality
of Brazilian cuisine available, makes it
Hotels
Manaus, like several other Brazilian destinations offers a quality range of
low-budget accommodation, quite essential for attracting tourists, many of whom
tend to be budget travellers.
